The recent decade has seen an advance in movies featuring cars in all their glory, the two mentioned here heading the list.

 

The Fast and the Furious takes us into the underground culture of street racing: a world of seasoned drivers, hot babes, and equally erection-inducing automobiles. Set in an urban backdrop amidst the heat of rival gangs, the film uses a crime story as an excuse to display a wide array of juiced-up cars and blitz-crazy racing sequences.

 

The cast was well picked for their particular roles, with the possible exception of Paul Walker, who, as the screenplay goes, really didn’t have to do much acting. The sound track and mixing fits the bill, and gears the viewer for the action sequences. The plot seems reminiscent of many cop flicks— an undercover policeman getting too involved with those he’s investigating and the film throws in a red herring for good measure. It’s a rehash yes, but not an entirely bad attempt of one.

 

Besides the main feature of the movie, anyway, are the cars and the racing. The autos are souped up, flashy from the chassis to their shiny sinews underneath the hood. While some might nitpick on a couple of mechanical elements here and there, the film writers did their research and their consultants know their stuff. Not just for style, the featured cars perform too. Aside from elevating a normal street racing scenes up a notch, the movie also adds a considerable amount of horsepower to their chase sequences. To boot, the stunt drivers and coordinators perform a truck-jacking heist at 100mph seamlessly which deserves a seat in the annals of film history.

 

Overall, it’s fun to watch, if you’re really into cars and looking for a high-paced action flick.

 

Speed Racer has been getting a lot of flak since its opening in May this year. Based on the famous 1960s Japanese cartoon series of the same name, Speed Racer the movie is the Wachowski brothers' take on this racing story.

 

Set in a dizzying world of colors that will never be found in a rainbow, the Racer family featuring Speed goes up against an evil automobile-racing magnate who is determined, in all his purple resplendence, to stop them from winning. It's the classic good vs. bad, the little people vs. the big, greedy conglomerates. Speed sets out to prove that that racing isn't all dirty, aided by the mysterious Racer X, in gravity-defying races that run from landscapes covered in ice to sand-blasted deserts.

 

Most of the negative comments on Speed Racer come from the campiness of the movie, the overwhelmingly blinding set productions and the weaker-than-watered-down-soda storyline. True, the dialogue consisted mostly of bunches of clichés strung together and it was rather painful having to watch Mr. Royalton mumble off that speech on racing, but the plot did have its moments.

 

The races were highly imaginative: CGI employed for all its worth. While fun to watch and thrilling in its own right, there was some confusion as to what exactly what was going on in the race. Despite everything though, Speed Racer earns some points at least for sticking true to its cartoon original. It's a must-watch for those who loved the series, for comparison's sake if not for anything else.

Film Review: Live Free or Die Hard

An improvement over the previous mess but a good film this does not make. Let’s just say that this film, like much of what Hollywood is putting out lately, is geared towards the brain-dead crowd who wants their action loud and story nil (or gone altogether) and R-rated violence numbed to the PG-13 crowd so that everyone and their grandmother won’t feel offended to go see. I’m offended that groundbreaking Die Hard franchise has been dumbed down to a knock-off of itself with neither the creativity nor the heart of its predecessor.

Let’s just forget that in both the first two films the heart of the film was watching how far John McClane (again Bruce Willis) will go to save the woman he loves not to mention his marriage. Everything he did was geared towards McClane discovering what truly made him both an endearing and fallible hero. He was someone whom the audience felt went through hell in order to reach heaven. Although in the third film the relationship with his wife was numbed down to a couple phone calls and off remarks from secondary characters, you never felt like McClane had any personal stake in what was going on around him and therefore the film became nothing more than a cop film with no heart. Nothing we hadn’t seen before by the countless other Die Hard knock-offs of the ‘90s.

The new film Lie Free or Die Hard is nothing more than action set pieces stitched together in an action movie with little story to tie everything together. I’m not saying there isn’t one; I just saying that other knock-offs have come up with better. In Die Hard 4 McClane is having problems with his daughter Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who looks to be in college prompting me to think has twenty years really gone by since the last film?) and to top it off he’s been put in charge of bringing a local hacker (Justin Long) to Washington D.C. for questioning by the FBI. This routine pick up turns into a blood bath of bullets as McClane soon discovers that the hacker may be responsible for helping a terrorist take over the United States via computers. The rest of the film follows McClane and the hacker from one set piece to the next as they try to overthrow the terrorists trying to overthrow the U.S. government. I commend screenwriter Mark Bomback for trying his hand at a patriotic action film similar to what Stallone did with his Rambo films, but those films had a heart and spirit left void here.

Once you get past the first fifteen minutes of set up which is atrociously paced giving the impression of a bad script with even worse acting from everyone involved because everything feels forced, the action set pieces are quite good and excellently handled by director Len Wiseman and his crew. This is not surprising since Wiseman did an excellent job on the Underworld series of films if only he had borrowed those screenwriters for a rewrite. There are several nice moments between McClane and the hacker, whose constantly asks why McClane does what he does, that question the definition of what a hero “is” and what a hero sacrifices in order to become a hero. These scenes are at the heart of the film only by the end of the film there is no payoff for McClane’s character as he never truly realizes what he has sacrificed to become this “All-American Hero” that everyone in the film claims he is.

I’m sure they tried to show this through his relationship with his daughter Lucy, who at the beginning of the film claims her mother’s maiden name, but her scenes are few and far in between and she comes off as a last minute addition to the film as her character truly has nothing to do.

The film also has no problem going against character as the mastermind behind the terrorism Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant) has no problem forcing his men to kill innocents in order to kill McClane, as the scene in the tunnel plainly shows, but for no reason at all he has problems killing McClane’s daughter, McClane being the man that killed his girlfriend and constantly provokes him to no end. Gabriel should’ve had no problems killing McClane’s daughter and then taunting him to no end but because the film is hampered by so many other things these scenes in the third act are laughable at best.

The film is best played for laughs as that’s all that’s left in the franchise since McClane has now become as bad as Spider-Man with the one liners and retorts. Not once in the entire film do you ever feel McClane is any danger and not once do you find yourself taking anything seriously. We all know it is a film and meant to entertain but how far does the action film genre have to fall before we finally say enough is enough? Where are the original Die Hards or Lethal Weapons or First Blood? Has the well dried so much or does Hollywood just no longer have a backbone? Where has the heart gone?

21 stars Kevin Spacey as a slick, conniving college professor Micky Rosa who can beat the casinos at their own game: Blackjack. He recruits costar Jim Sturgess, who plays a white and nerdy student at MIT named Ben Campbell. Ben can do serious math on the fly, gets all A's at MIT, and plans to go to Harvard Medical School. But Ben needs money. He works at a men's clothing store for $8 an hour, and can't pay for med school.

To get a jump on his graduate school money needs, Ben wants to win the prestigious Robinson Scholarship, a large award big enough to pay for all of Harvard Med, or about $300,000. Big money. Unfortunately, he may not have a chance against his competition for the scholarship: last year, the scholarship went to an immigrant with one leg. Worried, he starts looking for other ways to make money.

Professor Rosa and a cute MIT student and blackjack spotter Jill Taylor, played by Kate Bosworth, pull Ben onto the team for his stellar math skills. He starts spending every spare moment learning the ways of the blackjack table.

What Happens in Vegas
Prof Rosa and Jill, along with the rest of the team, drill Ben on the finer points of card counting to beat the house in Blackjack. They show him how the team works to win at the tables. When to split your hand, when to leave, when the deck is hot and so on. They also play around with a few disguises and personalities, to keep the casino guessing and to keep winning. I enjoyed watching the team work, with signals, code, shuffles and all. In real life, this would take many weeks, and then the casinos carefully watch for it at their own pits on camera.

If a casino catches them card counting, the penalty could be severe. You can probably find easier ways to get money for college than staring at the fist of a security manager named Cole, played by Laurence Fishburn. Cole doesn't tolerate counting at his tables, while at the same time losing customers to new security measures at casinos across town. Ben finds out the hard way that casinos like to keep their money.

The plot moves around, Boston to Las Vegas, in school to the Blackjack pits. You'll find a few twists, and you'll see the team live it up in Vegas. Ben and Jill have a few moments together, for a little love story.

Ben also alienates a couple of his brainy friends during the movie, and ruins some of their plans for another project. He has to deal with the ethics - the lies - about having lots of money around, flying to Las Vegas for the weekend constantly, and keeping secrets about his other group of friends.

As he gambles on the team and blackjack to pay for med school, he finds his life in a spiral. His life starts to fall apart, and the fun gives way to pressure. He has to stop it before he loses control completely, and can't reclaim his future or the present.

The movie has a fun, Hollywood finish. The specifics I'll leave for you to see in the movie itself. 21 entertained, and I enjoyed it. It has a few typical Las Vegas show scenes inappropriate for younger viewers.

Remember, this is a movie. You'll find a few good twists and some nonlinear story telling. I don't recommend earning money for college like this, but the scholarship essay adds to the ending. Go see it.

The cast was well picked for their particular roles, with the possible exception of Paul Walker, who, as the screenplay goes, really didn’t have to do much acting. Not just for style, the featured cars perform too. Aside from elevating a normal street racing scenes up a notch, the movie also adds a considerable amount of horsepower to their chase sequences. To boot, the stunt drivers and coordinators perform a truck-jacking heist at 100mph seamlessly which deserves a seat in the annals of film history.

 

Overall, it’s fun to watch, if you’re really into cars and looking for a high-paced action flick.

 

Speed Racer has been getting a lot of flak since its opening in May this year. Based on the famous 1960s Japanese cartoon series of the same name, Speed Racer the movie is the Wachowski brothers' take on this racing story.

 

Set in a dizzying world of colors that will never be found in a rainbow, the Racer family featuring Speed goes up against an evil automobile-racing magnate who is determined, in all his purple resplendence, to stop them from winning. It's the classic good vs. bad, the little people vs. the big, greedy conglomerates. Speed sets out to prove that that racing isn't all dirty, aided by the mysterious Racer X, in gravity-defying races that run from landscapes covered in ice to sand-blasted deserts.

 

Most of the negative comments on Speed Racer come from the campiness of the movie, the overwhelmingly blinding set productions and the weaker-than-watered-down-soda storyline. True, the dialogue consisted mostly of bunches of clichés strung together and it was rather painful having to watch Mr. Royalton mumble off that speech on racing, but the plot did have its moments.

 

The races were highly imaginative: CGI employed for all its worth. While fun to watch and thrilling in its own right, there was some confusion as to what exactly what was going on in the race. Despite everything though, Speed Racer earns some points at least for sticking true to its cartoon original. It's a must-watch for those who loved the series, for comparison's sake if not for anything else.

Aspiring Actors often ask the question "How can I get discovered?" The answer is simple and logical, but on the other hand being discovered as an actor it is far from easy to make happen. At the same time, however, let’s not mislead anyone. Being discovered out of the blue without any preparation or without having done any work is about as likely as winning the multi million dollar lottery. Some people play all their lives and never win!

One way that many actors get discovered is... Are you ready? They POSITION themselves to be discovered! That's right. Read on to see how.

 

By POSITIONING yourself to be discovered I mean:

 

1. Start training and don't stop no matter how good you think you are or how good others tell you are, so that when you do put yourself up in front of the right people, you will be ready!

2. Study the industry. Find out how it works. Find out who casts what, what agents look for in an actor, what the unions do, what the current issues are in the industry, etc.

3. Figure out what your type is. This is a concept you need to be familiar with! It will help you funnel you marketing efforts.

4. Learn basic business, networking and self-promotional skills. So important! You need to make sure you stand out from everyone else. You need to be delicately tenacious as well!

5. Learn how to audition. Auditioning and acting on set are two different beasts. Auditioning is like the serve in tennis. It’s completely different from the rest of the game.

6. Surround yourself with people who are already doing what you want and not with people who are trying to get what you want. You are more likely to learn from people who are already doing what you want to do. So go find them and learn from them!

7. Talk to both working actors, who are making a living from acting as well as to aspiring actors who have been talking a lot over the past couple of years and really haven't done very much. You can learn from both groups! From one you learn what to do. From the other, you will learn how NOT to be.

8. Stay curious and never ever think you know it all. Be humble. You can always get better, whether in your acting technique, auditioning, sharpening your monologue delivery, on-camera technique, learning about the industry or whatever. You never stop learning!

9. Once you start to achieve some success, help others who are in the same position you were once. You'll see that it will pay off.

10. At some point during all this you should ask yourself (and be honest) if you really, honestly and truly have the passion for acting to DO WHAT IS NECESSARY to succeed. Without that passion much will be lost and it will be difficult for you to achieve the success you desire. And what’s more, you probably won’t be very happy.

 

Once you do those things regularly, you will start to intuitively know how to position yourself to be discovered.

French Triumph at Cannes But Flop at Eurovision

For the first time in 21 years a French film has scooped top honours for best movie at the Cannes film festival.

“Entre les murs” (The Class) directed by Laurent Cantet won the coveted Palme d’Or on a unanimous decision by the jury.

It was only the fourth time a French production had triumphed since the gaggle of glitterati first started gathering for the annual film festival on the Côte d’Azur in 1946.

The film is a mix of documentary and fiction, following the lives of a class and their teacher in a tough inner city secondary school in Paris over the course of a year.

It was written by, and stars François Begaudeau – himself a teacher – with most of the other roles being filled by real students and teachers.

The president of the jury, US actor Sean Penn, was fulsome in his praise for the winner calling it an amazing film. Before the festival he had insisted that it was impossible to separate film from politics, and had promised that the winning film would be a reflection of the current climate.

Most would agree that “Entre les murs” is just that.

While the win might have come as something of a surprise given the relatively low profile of the film - mainly because it was shown on the last day of competition - there were beaming smiles all round as the French media gave itself a collective pat on the back for the win.

The national state television channel, France 2, was particularly pleased with itself as it was one of the main financial backers of the film and ran a live interview with Cantet, Begaudeau and some of the students at the end of its prime time news on Sunday.

The film isn’t actually due for general release until October this year, but already the culture minister, Christine Albanel, has jumped on the proverbial bandwagon and called for it to be screened in secondary schools throughout the country.

While Cannes attracts filmmakers and actors from around the globe, it’s also a special chance for some of Hollywood’s modern greats to bask in the sun and even more importantly their own glory as they give the assembled paparazzi more than their fair share of photo ops. And this year naturally was no exception.

There was the world premiere of the latest “Indiana Jones” movie with its star Harrison Ford showing up along with the director Steven Spielberg - who popped off to Paris to collect the Legion d’honneur. Of course “Brangelina” pitched up looking resplendently pregnant with twins – well at least one half of them did. Eva Longoria, Dustin Hoffman, Clint Eastwood and many, many others also tripped their way along La Croisette.

So the red carpet has been rolled up and another fun-packed carnival has come to an end.

While France might have triumphed at Cannes, there was no weekend “cultural” double whammy. At Saturday’s annual music jamboree, considered by many to be inappropriately called the Eurovision Song contest, the French contestant, Sébastien Tellier, could only manage 19th place (out of 25).

He notched up a miserly 47 points at the knees-up held this year in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, despite resorting to English lyrics and putting in a performance of his electro-pop “Divine” that by any critical standards was both professional and entertaining.

Still Eurovision, would not be Eurovision without the usual tactical voting as countries awarded top marks to neighbours and (former) political allies. Russia might have been victorious this time around and consequently won the right to host next year’s contest, but already there are calls for the “Big Four” (financial contributors), France, Germany, Britain and Spain to withdraw from future participation.

So no “douze points” for Tellier or France in Belgrade, but top marks at Cannes.

There were many changes made which I felt were not appreciated by me as well as the viewers. I sensed that things wre going astray then, and everyone knows that we can't fool the audience.

Who is that one friend you made on the sets of Ardhangini with whom you are going to be in touch forever?
I couldn't one person as the whole unit has been like a family. I am pretty sure that I will be in touch with everyone.

Any other show you are working on?
I have been approached by Balaji Telefims and 9X. Right now talks are on and I am considering few projects.

Do you plan to take up movies in the near future?
Here again, I have been approched with couple of film producers. If everything goes well, hopefully end of this year, I will start shooting.Till then, I can't disclose anything regarding it, as it's yet in the initial stages.

Ardhangini was one different serial of its own kind, so what according to you went wrong?
I would say that the execution was not exactly the way we had conceptualized. Even the storyline wasn't up to the mark.

Will you miss coming to shoot everyday?
For the past three years, I have been working non stop. So believe me, I am definitely going to miss the daily shoots.

You have done two serious roles as Krish in Mamta and Priyam in Ardhangini don't you want to experiment other generes too?

Firstly, I am nowhere in this industry when compared to SRK. He is the superstatar. According to me, the moment this serial was compared to Devdas, right there I felt its downfall started. I always said that it's not wise to compare the serial to Devdas or any film for the matter of fact, because it will be like fooling the audience.

Which is that one ' to-die-for' role in television?
I would like to do a gangster's role. I have done family dramas for long time. So that will be a good change.

You are said to be Zee's blue-eyed boy...
I am nobody's blue-eyed boy. If I love a role, I take it up. It is sheer coincidence that both the shows were on the same channel. I am open to anything creative.

For the past three years, my personal life has been revolving around sets only. But my two dogs are my lifeline. For them, I go home everyday. Of course my dada is there.

Film Review: Live Free or Die Hard

An improvement over the previous mess but a good film this does not make. Let’s just say that this film, like much of what Hollywood is putting out lately, is geared towards the brain-dead crowd who wants their action loud and story nil (or gone altogether) and R-rated violence numbed to the PG-13 crowd so that everyone and their grandmother won’t feel offended to go see. I’m offended that groundbreaking Die Hard franchise has been dumbed down to a knock-off of itself with neither the creativity nor the heart of its predecessor.

Let’s just forget that in both the first two films the heart of the film was watching how far John McClane (again Bruce Willis) will go to save the woman he loves not to mention his marriage. Everything he did was geared towards McClane discovering what truly made him both an endearing and fallible hero. He was someone whom the audience felt went through hell in order to reach heaven. Although in the third film the relationship with his wife was numbed down to a couple phone calls and off remarks from secondary characters, you never felt like McClane had any personal stake in what was going on around him and therefore the film became nothing more than a cop film with no heart. Nothing we hadn’t seen before by the countless other Die Hard knock-offs of the ‘90s.

The new film Lie Free or Die Hard is nothing more than action set pieces stitched together in an action movie with little story to tie everything together. I’m not saying there isn’t one; I just saying that other knock-offs have come up with better. In Die Hard 4 McClane is having problems with his daughter Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who looks to be in college prompting me to think has twenty years really gone by since the last film?) and to top it off he’s been put in charge of bringing a local hacker (Justin Long) to Washington D.C. for questioning by the FBI. This routine pick up turns into a blood bath of bullets as McClane soon discovers that the hacker may be responsible for helping a terrorist take over the United States via computers. The rest of the film follows McClane and the hacker from one set piece to the next as they try to overthrow the terrorists trying to overthrow the U.S. government. I commend screenwriter Mark Bomback for trying his hand at a patriotic action film similar to what Stallone did with his Rambo films, but those films had a heart and spirit left void here.

Once you get past the first fifteen minutes of set up which is atrociously paced giving the impression of a bad script with even worse acting from everyone involved because everything feels forced, the action set pieces are quite good and excellently handled by director Len Wiseman and his crew. This is not surprising since Wiseman did an excellent job on the Underworld series of films if only he had borrowed those screenwriters for a rewrite. There are several nice moments between McClane and the hacker, whose constantly asks why McClane does what he does, that question the definition of what a hero “is” and what a hero sacrifices in order to become a hero. These scenes are at the heart of the film only by the end of the film there is no payoff for McClane’s character as he never truly realizes what he has sacrificed to become this “All-American Hero” that everyone in the film claims he is.

I’m sure they tried to show this through his relationship with his daughter Lucy, who at the beginning of the film claims her mother’s maiden name, but her scenes are few and far in between and she comes off as a last minute addition to the film as her character truly has nothing to do.

The film also has no problem going against character as the mastermind behind the terrorism Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant) has no problem forcing his men to kill innocents in order to kill McClane, as the scene in the tunnel plainly shows, but for no reason at all he has problems killing McClane’s daughter, McClane being the man that killed his girlfriend and constantly provokes him to no end. Gabriel should’ve had no problems killing McClane’s daughter and then taunting him to no end but because the film is hampered by so many other things these scenes in the third act are laughable at best.

The film is best played for laughs as that’s all that’s left in the franchise since McClane has now become as bad as Spider-Man with the one liners and retorts. Not once in the entire film do you ever feel McClane is any danger and not once do you find yourself taking anything seriously. We all know it is a film and meant to entertain but how far does the action film genre have to fall before we finally say enough is enough? Where are the original Die Hards or Lethal Weapons or First Blood? Has the well dried so much or does Hollywood just no longer have a backbone? Where has the heart gone?
